His mother too was injured. All of the people in the village were taken to a refugee camp in Ragama. Ruchira was born in the Ragama hospital, and when Ruchira's mother went back to the camp, there was no one. Everyone had been moved to other places. His grandmother and sister have not been located yet. When he was 5, he was brought to Clarendon. When he was 6, his mother died of cancer from the wounds. He has no one. Children with cancer
We have been able to provide for the support of young cancer patients through the
assistance and cooperation of the Association For Lighting A Candle (AFLAC) in
Sri Lanka. AFLAC’s cancer program appoints a volunteer caseworker for each
cancer patient. AFLAC volunteers visit these patients each month and provide
them with the necessary nutrients and medications. AFLAC has selected the
children for assistance after careful screening for financial need. The
children, afflicted with cancer, and treated at the Maharagama Cancer Institute,
are now being cared for in their own homes throughout the island. We provide a
monthly allowance for their care and support, and AFLAC’s caseworker monitors
the patient’s progress and needs. All expenditures are made by the volunteer
caseworker, based on the patient’s needs. An accounting is provided to AFLAC,
and then to us. Some of them:

May they have eternal peace.
